Of particular interest are: general impression (nutritional and hydration status, agitation, gloominess, signs of anxiety), mouth and throat; pulse rate; temperature; lymph nodes; thyroid; heart; lungs; abdomen (rectal toucher) and peripheral edema. In addition, people are guided by the history and outcomes of the case history. It must be realized that weight loss may be masked by severe edema. Not much is known about the predictive value of the physical examination. In a specialist population, physical examination, independent of the results of the history, appeared to contribute to the detection of organic causes.
